If you only remember one thing: an axe is a wedge, a saw is a kerf. Use the wedge with the grain. Use the kerf across it. Mixing those up is how people get tired, loud, and unlucky.
The three cuts

A sane sequence on a night-stop
- Take standing dead or downed dry if you can tell. Green wood is a wet fire and a dull edge.
- Limb with the axe. Work from the butt toward the tip so you are not cutting into the crotch.
- Buck to length with the saw. Wrist-thick and up is saw work. Hacking across grain with an axe is how handles and wrists retire early.
- Split what needs splitting. Small rounds: axe. Stubborn: poll and a wedge, which is why a decorative poll is a problem.
- Process kindling with a knife or the beard of the axe, not the bit on a rock.
Where HELVE sits in that sequence
CHOP and DRIVE are instant — saw stowed, 3.30 lb design target. SAW 32″ is the bucking tool, target 40 seconds to assemble. REACH 52″ is overhead limbing without standing on something stupid. LIGHT is the ridge walk: leave the saw kit in camp, carry 2.34 lb of actual axe.
Those times and masses are design targets. Prototype A will be timed and weighed on camera. If the numbers move, the page moves.
There is no ferro rod in this tool. Fire is a different system. We are not going to punch a hole in a striking handle to pretend otherwise.
