Field note · The problem

You carry two cutting tools. You use one at a time.

An axe splits, limbs and drives. A saw bucks, fells small timber and cuts square. Neither replaces the other — so the second tool is dead weight for most of the trip.

This is not a preference. It is mechanics. An axe concentrates force on a wedge. A saw removes a kerf. You need the wedge for splitting and the kerf for bucking. Carry only one and you will spend the trip fighting the wrong physics.

Why the usual combos fail

  • Saw folded into the handle. You hollowed the helve. It snaps. And the blade is six inches long.
  • Multi-tool with a saw. A three-inch blade. Useless on anything thicker than a wrist.
  • Hatchet plus folding saw. Two tools, two sheaths, two things to lose. Full weight penalty — which is honest, and is what most competent people actually do.

The third option works. It is also the thing HELVE is trying to stop costing you a full extra tool. The constraint everyone else hit: you cannot take material out of an axe handle without destroying it, and you cannot fit a useful saw into 19 inches.

Two ideas, and they depend on each other

1. The stowed saw is the handle's core

The handle is a closed 7075-T6 tube, not a drilled-out stick. Bending stiffness lives in the material far from the centreline. The remaining risks are local denting and ovalling. The spine rail, clamped in compression between the head collar and the butt cap, is the mandrel that stops both.

In axe mode the handle is a tube plus a core. In saw mode the tube is empty — and nothing is striking it. The empty state and the load case never coincide.

2. A segmented blade on a shared rail behaves as one bar

A 31-inch blade will not fit in a 19-inch handle. Three 10.5-inch segments will. Segmented blades normally fail because every joint is a hinge. HELVE's segments never join to each other. Each indexes onto the shared rail. Bending load goes into the rail. The segments carry tooth load only. Cutting length becomes how many segments you brought, not how long the handle is.

Pull-cut is not a style choice. A pull stroke puts the blade in tension, which is the only reason a thin segmented blade does not fold.

How you go from axe to saw

Design-target times — they will be measured on video with Prototype A and published whatever they say.

  1. Quarter-turn the T-grip out of the fawn's-foot. It is the saw handle.
  2. Withdraw the spine rail from the bore.
  3. Dovetail three blade segments onto the rail.
  4. Seat the T-grip. You are holding a 32-inch bucking saw. Telescope the rail if you need 52 inches of reach.

The axe stays an axe the whole time. Nothing was borrowed from it. That is the part that does not exist yet anywhere else — a claim about the architecture, not a ranking of other products.
