A folding saw is a different tool

Most folding bushcraft saws are six to seventeen inches of edge. That is a real tool. It is not a 32-inch bucking saw. The pack has to know the difference.

I am using Outdoor Life’s folding-saw roundup. Outdoor Life tested folding saws and put typical cutting edges in the 6–17.5 inch band, with tooth pitches clustering around ~6 TPI, 7–9 TPI, and 15–18 TPI. We have not put those saws on our scale. We are not ranking them. The number that matters for HELVE is the gap between a folding edge and a bucking edge.

What a folder is for

  • Wrist-thick and under, on a day walk.
  • One-hand, lock, stow in a pocket or pouch.
  • A second tool next to a hatchet. Honest. Heavy as a pair.

Two families show up in that roundup: folding bow frames and folding straight blades. Neither is trying to be a 32-inch one-hand bucking saw. Asking them to be is how people get a 7-inch blade and a disappointed night-stop.

Pull-cut is load path, not fashion. A thin segmented blade in compression folds at the seam. In tension it does not. Segments never join to each other; the spine rail bridges every seam. That is the same architecture as axe and saw.

The pack maths

Hatchet + folding saw is the competent default. Wikipedia’s bushcraft page still lists “a hatchet, a knife, and sometimes a saw” as staple tools. HELVE is the attempt to stop paying for the pair in full: axe work and saw work in one 3.30 lb kit (CAD), or 2.34 lb if you leave the saw in camp.

Not a “best folding saw of 2026”

Those lists are a different SERP and they require tests we have not run. When Prototype A exists, we will time the assembly and cut a known round on camera. Until then the only honest comparison is geometry.
